What is God’s Will for My Life?

This is one of the best questions you could ever ask yourself. The answer to this is what our entire relationship with God is hinged upon. Crazy thing is, most of us wander around aimlessly wondering what God’s will is, or if He even has one for us. We think maybe He has passed us up because of some hidden sin that we have yet to work out in our hearts.

Or maybe you are one of those that think God has just forgotten about  you because He has bigger and or better things to concern Himself with rather than to waste His time trying to help you figure out what is wrong with your life.  Or, maybe you have bought into the lie that God’s will is so complex that there is just no way a struggling christian like yourself could ever even begin to figure it out.

I hope that by the end of this you feel much more confident in the fact that God does have a will for you, and that you can know it beyond all doubt.

Doubt

The first and biggest obstacle to knowing God’s will for yourself is to overcome doubt. Doubt is a thief that breaks in and robs peace from you time and time again until you finally get so fed up with it you begin to think, “what’s the use, living for God is just way too hard.”  The Bible talks about four different kinds of soil of the heart. There were three that weren’t good and never produced anything that lasted or proved the tests of time. However, one was good and produced something that lasted. Here is what the Bible says about that soil, “The seeds that were planted on good ground are people who also hear the word. But they keep it in their good and honest hearts and produce what is good despite what life may bring” (Luke 8:15 GTW).

These are the four keys to knowing the will of God for yourself and then making it through the tough times: (1) Hear and obey the Word of God; James 1:22. (2) Have an honest heart (one that wants to please God); Psalms 51-10. (3) Produce good fruit; Matthew 7:17-20. (4) Stick with it no matter what; Psalm 23:4.

I’m convinced that the ones who make it in their relationship with God are the ones who find His will for themselves and then live it.  You see, doubt wants to tell you there is no use, you just aren’t going to ever really know God’s will for yourself. Doubt wants you to quit! Don’t fight! Run away to an easier life! We have to kill doubt early on before it begins to rob us blind. I love how Paul says it so plainly in Ephesians 4:27, “Neither give place to the devil.”  Also remember this, doubt is the enemy of faith! Paul also said this, “But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6  God WILL reward you with a work to do for Him if you are willing to first believe, and then seek.

GOD’S WILL IS SIMPLE

First thing you have to know is that  God has called you and He wants you. I love how Jesus takes away all doubt with what he says here in John 15:16, “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.”  Take a look at how simple James makes knowing what God wants from all of us. “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” James 1:27  How easy is that?! God couldn’t have made it any more simple if  He tried.

The main ingredient to all of this (God’s will) is this, “love.”  The Bible say more about love than it does about anything else. Take a look at what  Jesus says about being a disciple of God, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13;35  If you want to be known as a disciple of God, you MUST love one another. This is a must see about love. John 4: 7-8; 11-13; 18-21, “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. We love each others because he loved us first. If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?  And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian brothers and sisters.” (New Living Translation)

THE NEED FOR LOVE

We all have a need to love and be loved (see Ephesians 5:29). So when God calls us into a work it’s all about having those needs met, both for you and the one you are ministering to.  We cannot go through a relationship with God and never give love away. The reason a person can sit with a shrink and not feel as if they are getting anywhere is because that counselor isn’t fulfilling the calling of love. They must do what they do out of love or the one seeing them will walk away with all the same problems. When we love somebody in need God fulfills the need in us. Know this about God’s will for you as an individual; God will take you to where the biggest need is, so that you can best meet it with the love that God has given you to share.

SELFISHNESS STANDS IN THE WAY

James 3:13-18  NLT If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.”

For many are called, but few are chosen.Matthew 22:14
